Shiobara
a town characterized by hot springs, waterfalls and suspension bridges
Shiobara, a hot spring resort in the valley, has attracted many great figures in literature since long ago. Attractions here include the scenic beauty of the valleys, waterfalls and suspension bridges, including Momijidani Great Suspension Bridge that boasts of being the longest of its kind in Japan. The 11 different spring sources gushing out here enhance the atmosphere of a spa town.

Ryuka Falls
Ryuka Falls, flowing down 130 meters in a three stages, comes first on the list of Shiobara’s ten most famous waterfalls. A waterfall observation platform near the basin offers a dynamic view.
Mikaeri Suspension Bridge and Mikaeri Falls
This 100-meter-long suspension bridge over the crystal-clear Houkigawa River is a good place to admire the seasonal changes of the beautiful valley. Mikaeri Falls looks particularly graceful with the bridge and the Houkigawa River in front of it. The waterfall suddenly plummets 45 meters, enthralling viewers with the stunning combination of the surrounding scenery.
Shiobara Valley Hiking Trail
This nature trail extends 12 kilometers along the valley of the Houkigawa River, allowing a pleasant walk through the forests while fully appreciating the scenic beauty.
Memorial Park of the Emperor’s Room
The former Shiobara Imperial Villa used during summer by Emperors Taisho and Showa and many other imperial family members has been moved and preserved here. Stationery, documents, photos and other materials from which the lifestyle of the imperial family can be understood are on display inside the building.
Momijidani Great Suspension Bridge
This 320-meter-long overpass spanning the crystal-clear Houkigawa River at the entrance of Shiobara hot spring resort is the longest pedestrian bridge in Japan without support girders. The view of fresh greenery, autumnal tints and snowy landscapes from this bridge is impressive.
Nichien Momiji (Maple) Line
The 28-kilometer driving course connecting Shiobara Hot Springs, the Kinugawa River and Kawaji Hot Springs offers a superb view, particularly during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumnal tints. Along this route, there are also Arayu Hot Springs, Keicho Highland, Taiko-oroshi Falls and Shirataki Falls, an observatory commanding a panoramic view of the Nikko Mountain Range on fine days and ski hills (Hunter Mountain, Edelweiss, etc.).
Shiobara Literature Museum
Opened in April 2003, this facility introduces Shiobara’s local culture and nature. Shiobara hot spring resort is known for having attracted many writers since the Meiji Period. There are many monuments with inscriptions of excerpts from literature, songs and haiku poems in the town. Materials on Natsume Soseki, Ozaki Koyo and other great writers related to or fascinated by this place are on display inside the Western-style building.
Iwano-Yu and Fudono-Yu Hot Springs
These outdoor baths for mixed bathing are located deep in the mountains and surrounded by rocks. To go there from the hot spring town, cross the suspension bridge from the hot spring town and walk along the Houkigawa River. Enjoy bathing in a natural setting while appreciating the rustic scenery.
Shiobara Hot Springs
The hot spring resort along the Houkigawa River has a long history since it was discovered in 806. It is called “Shiobara Juichi-Yu,” because of 11 hot springs existing here, each with different qualities: Oami, Fukuwata, Shionoyu, Shiogama, Hataori, Monzen, Furumachi, Nakashiobara, Kamishiobara, Arayu, Motoyu. Although there are now many clean, modern hotels here, this area retains a traditional atmosphere exclusive to spas. This area is known nationwide for its scenic beauty, which is particularly impressive in seasons of fresh greenery and crimson foliage. This is an ideal place to enjoy a breathtaking view of Japanese valleys throughout the four seasons.
